life | 開學。班中十八人多為香港人，只有四位女生。Academic English 和 Mathematics，只是 introduction。放學後與 Danny 和 Judith 吃魚蛋麵，然後喝咖啡。 晚上 skim 了 J.B.Fitzpatrick 那兩本《 New Senior Mathematics》，基礎那些，程度與香港 Form one 相約；較深入那些，程度與香港 Form six/seven 相約，有些更是 Form six/seven Applied Mathematics 的課程，如 Trapezoidal rule 和 Simpson's rule，即大多香港預科生也未涉獵到的﹝大多工程或電腦只 require Pure Mathematics，甚少人選修 Applied Mathematics﹞。淺的如此淺，深的如此深，十分期待這個為期八個多月的課程如何編排。 |

| | 足球 Soccer | 多年前 AC 米蘭在歐洲足協盃某一圈首回合領先二比零，我心想：「沒有多少球隊能以三比零擊倒 AC 米蘭吧！」結果次回合 AC 米蘭以零比三落敗。如今 AC 米蘭在歐洲聯賽冠軍盃八強首回合領先四比一，我再沒有喊出「沒有多少球隊能以三比零擊倒 AC 米蘭」之話，結果次回合 AC 米蘭以零比四落敗。隨著皇家馬德里和阿仙奴同在八強下馬，歐洲聯賽冠軍盃四強可觀性大減。縱然車路士今季以金錢換來一級陣容，始終難與 AC 米蘭、皇家馬德里或阿仙奴相比。又，四強中只有波圖曾嘗這項賽事的冠軍。 | 生活 Life | 外賣晚餐，每人半隻燒雞，呵呵！ |

life | 星期二共有四小時 break，今天在 Union Coffee Republic 喝咖啡時竟談到李天命、香港的專欄作家、香港政治和宗教問題。Pierre 竟是「挺董」人。跟基督徒 Roger 談世界之形成，他只說除上帝外不能解釋；談上帝的存在，他只說沒有人能否定聖經；談石頭問題，他只說不能用常人邏輯看。在 Mathematics tutorial 時談到神愛世人，世界卻如此不均、貧富懸殊，他則無言以對。都是些老掉牙的對答，且看他日能否有深入的討論。 晚上做了 Physics tutorial book unit 2,3，都是香港會考的程度，奈何我被不少問題難倒。 |

life | 今天只有一小時 break，午膳後又到 Union Coffee Republic 歇了一會。問了 Roger，如果基督教的神是唯一的，為何世上有那麼多宗教那麼多神，他只說不了解其他宗教。另外亦淺談了同性戀、墮胎和安樂死等問題。 跟同學們討論昨夜的 Physics 問題，我認為最難的一題，Victor So 不消一會即解決了。亦問了 Andrew Parker 某些問題，他……實在太詳細了。我問他 part (e)，他先解題目，繼而分析，再又 part (a) 計起……聽了十多分鐘，他再以一分鐘解決了我的問題。 星期一的 Mathematics diagnostic test 派卷。 晚上做了 Chemistry tutorial book unit 3。亦在《Physics Spectrum》和《Problems in Physics》選了一些題目來做。 |

| | 電影 Movie | 電視播影 Quentin Tarantino 的《Pulp Fiction》，聽不懂，沒有看完。我看電影幾乎從來沒有「半途而廢」。《Pulp Fiction》是 Tarantino 的代表作，在 imdb.com 排名甚高，Roger Ebert 亦有介紹。一直找不到影碟。這夜電視播影，本來是必看的，可是我的英文太差勁了，聽不懂，只好放棄，繼續等待影碟推出。 寶釵說：「男人們讀書不明理，尚且不如不讀書的好。」哼哼。 |

| | 科學 Science | 在中學物理唸相對速度，只知道一條 vector subtraction 公式，例如船在海上航行的速度是船的速度減水流的速度。然而…… 你看到一輛跑車向東走，那麼跑車的速度是相對於你的。絕對速度不存在，因為沒有靜止的觀察者。你看跑車，但你站在地球上，地球在自轉及公轉，太陽亦在轉動。這有助理解站在均速的火車上垂直向上拋球後可接回，從而引伸若火車在加速，向前拋才可接回球；若火車在減速，向後拋才可接回球。 量度不到絕對速度，只可量度相對速度，這是愛因斯坦相對論之於沒有加速度的物體。 霍金《時間簡史》云：「牛頓運動定律使空間中絕對位置的觀念告終。而相對論擺脫了絕對時間。」而且，「同時」﹝simultaneous﹞也不是絕對的。 |

| | 教育 Education | Gave a presentation entitled "is moral education possible?" Two sections: aims of moral education and some approaches to moral education. First, what is moral education? Lodge, professor of Logic and History of Philosophy in the University of Manitoba, defined education as "the experience of a living organism interaction with its normal environment" (1947, 10). Moral education, in the wider sense, can be defined as "direct and indirect intervention of the school which affects both moral behavior and the capacity to think about issues of right and wrong" (Purpel & Ryan, 1976, 5). Here is the outline: 1. Aims of moral education Have you ever cheated? Researches showed that most students had cheated. A common conceptual approach to this issue is viewing it through the lack of moral education (Eisenberg, 2004, 163-4). The eighteenth century German philosopher Kant believed that "if he lives among others of his own species, man is an animal who need a master. For he certainly abuses his freedom in relations to others of his own kind" (cited in Dixon, 1985, 55). Baier suggested that moral education gives human an understanding of the nature and purpose of a group's morality. Private moral sanction is required to keep a moral man in line (1971, 107-8). 2. Some approaches to moral education Kohlberg stressed that most psychologists and sociologists who write about moral values start with the assumption that there are no universal moral principles. All values are relative (1971, 30). Teachers act as a "moral guide" rather than as an exponent of conformity (1971, 83). Family meeting is proposed to overcome family friction. "Decisions can only be binding if every member present agrees" (Dinkmeyer and McKay, cited in Stanley, 1980, 347). Oser pointed out that a certain amount of negative experiences is required. Mistakes can build up awareness of not repeating the wrong behaviour (1996, 67-9). Discussion Questions are as follows: 1. A woman was suffering from a very bad disease. There was only one particular drug that can cure her. The doctor decided to charge her ten times the drug cost price. Her husband could only afford half of that amount, so the doctor refused to sell it (Kohlberg, 1971, 33). If you were the husband, what would you do? 2. In the previous situation, the husband decided to steal the drug. "Should the husband have done that? Why?" (Kohlberg, 1971, 33). 3. Which party, the parents or the teachers, is more responsible in providing moral education for children? 4. Should moral education be included in high school examination? 5. Handwriting device, need to be reinstalled everytime after the PC is down if I was using it. I think it's going to die soon. AMD Athlon Thunder Bird 700MHz, 128 SD RAM. I have been using it since July, 2000. |
