閱後感二則

其一：《The Catcher in the Rye》

　　《The Catcher in the Rye》﹝《麥田捕手》或《麥田守望者》﹞，作者 J.D.Salinger。此小說講述一名少年被逐出校後，在聖誕節假期發生的事，主角常憶述往事。透過這些事及對別人的描繪，反映出少年的憤世嫉俗，厭棄跟虛偽的人交往，同時不愛老生常談的事。二零零三年版《Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English》如此介紹：「此書特別為青少年們所喜愛，因為它描述青春期﹝即兒童發展成人的時期﹞的問題與經驗。」﹝The book has been especially popular with young people because it describes the problems and experiences of adolescence (=the time when a child is developing into an adult) .﹞

　　書中的見解時而精闢，時而逗笑，時而發人深省。如 Mr.Spencer 對主角說「人生是一個遊戲」﹝life is a game﹞，主角回應道：「某些遊戲。如果你懂得混，就是遊戲，全對——我承認。但如果你混不好，那是什麼一個遊戲？沒有，沒有遊戲。」﹝Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it's a game, all right - I'll admit. But if you get on the other side, where there aren't any hot-shots, then what's a game about it? Nothing. No game.﹞又如在升降機外說服 elevator boy 後的一番話：「他不知道我在放什麼屁，所以他只是『噢』和帶我上樓。不壞，小子。有趣。你只須胡亂說些沒有人聽懂的東西，那麼他們便會依你。」﹝He didn't know what the hell I was talking about, so all he said was "Oh" and took me up. Not bad, boy. It's funny. All you have to do is say something nobody understands and they'll do practically anything you want them to.﹞

　　主角對女性的態度，宛如錢鍾書先生名著《圍城》中的方鴻漸，渴望戀愛。至於他能否得到垂青，姑且賣個關子，留待讀者自行發掘。

其二：《Animal Farm》

　　《Animal Farm》﹝《動物農莊》、《動物農場》或《動物莊園》﹞，作者歐威爾﹝George Orwell﹞。此小說講述一農莊裡的動物不甘被人類統治，群起反抗，從人類手中奪得統治權。再借種種事件諷刺民主與獨裁的黑暗面。

　　當中三件事尤其使筆者深刻。七誡﹝Seven Commandments﹞簡化為一則「四腿皆好，兩腿皆壞。」﹝Four legs good, two legs bad.﹞，鳥兒起初有所異議，Snowball 說了一番話解釋鳥兒為 four legs，鳥兒不明白那番話，但接受了 Snowball 的解釋，此其一；動物每次投票前席皆有辯論，一次，Napoleon 與 Snowball 先後發表意見，「動物們先認同 Napoleon 之說，其後認同 Snowball，又不能分辨誰是誰非；事實上，牠們發覺自己認同正在發言的一方。」﹝The animals listened first to Napoleon, then to Snowball, and could not make up their minds which was right; indeed they always found themselves in agreement with the one who was speaking at the moment.﹞，此其二；部分動物看不懂寫在牆上的七誡，另外一些動物則將七誡改頭換面讀出，此其三。可見實行民主的前提是開民智。要不然，民眾只會成為被愚弄的對象。梁啟超先生早已了解到開民智的重要，可是他的理論在當時受到非議。

　　歐威爾一九零三年出生。《Animal Farm》於一九四三年十一月動筆，一九四四年二月完成，曾因題材敏感而未能出版。幾經周折出版後，甚為震撼。一九四九年出版的《一九八四》亦是他的代表作。一九五零年，歐威爾在倫敦逝世。紐約書評﹝New York Review of Books﹞的 Timothy Garton Ash 曾道：「歐威爾是二十世紀最有影響的政治作家。」﹝Orwell is the most influential political writer of the twentieth century.﹞
